Books and Articles
Safe Haven Marriage, by Archibald D. Hart, Ph.D. and Sharon Hart Morris, Ph.D., Thomas Nelson, Nashville, 2003.
This is the only book about marriage that is written for couples from an Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy perspective. It is excellent, but hard to find in bookstores. It can easily be ordered from amazon.com.
The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, by John M. Gottman, Ph.D., Three Rivers Press, New York, 1999.
This book is based on extensive research and spells out exactly what it takes to build a successful marriage. Included are specific skills that can help any couple improve their relationship.
Not “Just Friends”, by Shirley P. Glass, Ph.D., Free Press, New York, 2003.
Dr. Glass’s excellent book is a step-by step guide through the process of infidelity - from suspicion to revelation to healing. It is probably the best book ever written on the subject.
How to Break Your Addiction to a Person, by Howard M. Halpern, Ph.D., Bantam Books, New York, 1982.
Written a few years ago, this book is still worth its weight in gold for helping a person to break away from an affair partner.
Should We Stay Together?, by Jeffry Larson, Ph.D., Jossey-Bass, San Franciso, 2000.
This book, for premarital couples, is a scientifically proven method for evaluating your relationship and improving its chances for long-term success. It is highly recommended for anyone who is considering marriage.

If you are a therapist and
want to know more about attachment theory and research, this summary by R.
Chris Fraley may be of interest. Among other things, this summary explains
how early studies on attachment in the infant-mother relationship gave rise to
later studies on attachment in adult romantic love.
